Dr. Manfred Schütze

During this year's 13th International Conference on Urban Drainage, Dr Manfred Schütze, scientist at ifak Magdeburg research institute, has been elected as Chair of the Joint Committee on Urban Drainage of IWA (International Water Association) and IAHR (International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research). This committee is formed by eleven members from all over the world. It coordinates, on a world-wide level, research and implementation activities in the field of urban drainage. This is achieved mainly by coordination of various working groups of IWA and IAHR, the two most prestigious professional associations worldwide in the fields of water management and hydrology. The nomination of Dr Schütze for the position of the Chair of the Joint Committee reflects not only his own research work, but also the research and application-oriented work of the Department of Water and Energy of the research institute ifak e. V., an institute associated to Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg.

Dr Schütze, born in 1966, obtained his Master's Degree in Mathematics from Hannover University. From those days on, then continuing with a research stay at EAWAG/Switzerland and wit his doctoral research (Award of PhD in 1998 from Imperial College London), he is involved in modelling and simulation of water systems. Since 2001, Dr Schütze works with ifak Magdeburg as an expert in mathematical modelling and control of water and wastewater systems. Within the German Assocation on Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) and within the International Water Association (IWA), he is actively involved in particular in integrated real time control of urban drainage systems. Among his numerous research projects at ifak Magdeburg, his transdiscplinary work for Lima, the capital of Peru, contributed to the good reputation of German megacity research.
