Evaluation of feasibility studies and creation of planning tools for Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) processes

PAC

To date, there are no legal regulations in Germany that govern the operation of a method for targeted elimination of trace substances and consequently no clear limits for concentrations of these substances in effluents. However in Baden-Württemberg, there is already 15 WWTP with a process for the targeted elimination of trace substances are in operation. 17 more plants are in the planning or construction phase. Almost 125 plants are eligible for expansion. In the framework of the project previous feasibilty studies carried out on the use of PAC for the removal of micropollutants and the expansion or the construction of wastewater treatement plants to include a process for the targeted elimination of trace substances, will be analysed and a criteria for such feasibility studies will be set.

A second goal of this project is to develop, a simmulation-supported plannig tool in the simulation system SIMBA. This tool will simulate the use of Powdered Activated Carbon for Micropollutants removal from wastewater. With the help of this tool, comparisons between several procedures for the elimination of trace substances will be possible. Savings potential in operating resources through targeted control/regulation of processes and energy consumption as part of an eco-balance will be assessed.
