Magdeburg: Energy efficient city – Model city for renewable energies

MD-E4

The MD-E4 project was the result of the successful participation of Magdeburg in the competition "Energy Efficient City" by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The aim of the project was the reduction of CO2 emissions and the improvement of energy efficiency by the implementation of 11 sub-projects. ifak was involved in the sub-projects A1 (traffic management) and B2 (Automation of distribution networks). Sub-project B2 aimed at the decentralized automation of the electrical distribution network. For this purpose network models and algorithms for continuous monitoring and control of the network state were developed and digital measurement and operating devices were deployed. These smart operation concepts are motivated by the increased penetration of distributed energy resources in the distribution network that complicates voltage regulation. Through intelligent control of the power network (Smart Grid) more renewable energy resources can be integrated while at the same time reducing the need for expensive network expansions.
