Condition assessment of buried system-relevant infrastructure for proactive characterization of damage and technical decision support

ZUVERSICHT

The condition assessment of buried infrastructure to proactively mitigate damage and obtain application-specific decision support in the event of an earthquake is necessary to be able to act in a resource-conserving and sustainable manner. The aim of the ZUVERSICHT project is to develop a methodology for assessing potential damage to critical existing infrastructure. The aim is to investigate the risk potential of pipeline networks with regard to damage potential and damage-reducing factors.

In the project, investigations are carried out ranging from microscale assessments of pipe materials (FEM simulation, experiments) to macroscale consideration of the pipeline network structure (experiments, simulation). The simulation tool to be developed will make it possible to carry out preventive action planning to reduce vulnerability. In addition, the tool will be able to provide recommendations for improved management of earthquake-induced damage and its consequences. For this purpose, the vulnerability and impact characteristics of buried pipelines are analyzed and hazard potentials are determined based on current hazard maps and methods for real-time updating of ground motion models, among others.

Detailed simulations and experiments are used to obtain results on damage processes and mechanisms of action. Based on this, the vulnerability of buried pipelines is classified and integrated into the web-based simulation tool for hazard assessment with decision support for proactive mitigation.
