Multi-modal analysis of acoustic sound transmission in clamp on ultrasonic systems

MUSCLE

For industrial liquid analysis the non-invasive ultrasonic clamp-on configuration is an interesting approach due to its non-destructive nature and easy handling. However, sophisticated signal analysis is often needed in order to discriminate the measurement effect from disturbances caused by the multimodal sound propagation, occuring from wave propagation within the pipe wall, from ringing or mode conversions. Within the research project, a software-based platform has been developed by which the multimodal sound wave propagation in a liquid filled pipe/container can be simulated based on linear modelling and numeric analysis.Thereby, enhanced a-priori knowledge of acoustic transmission characteristics can be achieved in an intended clamp-on application and the reliability of the measurement system can be improved. In principle, the application to non-dextructive evaluation (NDE) or machine and system diagnostics is allowed.
