New method of inline-monitoring the dispersion quality of polymer melts on the basis of modulated ultrasonic reflections

The dispersing quality of polymer compounds represents an essential quality criterion in the field of plastic processing. In practice offline methods of analysis are common, which are labor- and time-intensive and preclude a 100% process monitoring. However, for this purpose acoustic sensors are inline capable. They allow for measuring the dispersing quality of fillers directly in the compounding process and in real-time. Innovative approach of the project is the application of these sensors in reflection setup. Thereby, a one-sided access to the process plant without a bypass can be realized. The project moreover aims to stan­dardize the definition of dispersing quality since it does currently not exist consistently in plastic processing.
