Sustainable Water and Wastewater Management in Urban Growth Centres Coping with Climate Change – Concepts for Lima Metropolitana (Perú)

LiWa

This Peruvian-German co-operation project represents one of the projects within the BMBF research programme ‘Research for sustainable development of megacities of tomorrow’. As the only project with particular emphasis on water and wastewater systems including energy consideration, LiWa developed, under the leadership of ifak, tools and methods which facilitate sustainable management of the water and wastewater system of Lima/Peru, which represents an example of a megacity of tomorrow. Core aspects of this interdisciplinary project included macromodelling of the entire water and wastewater system with georeferenced output (contribution of ifak), modelling of the river catchment under scenarios of climate change, development and implementation of methods of stakeholder participation and governance and development of modules for Master courses. The “LiWatool” resource simulator has been finalised. It has been applied for evaluation of various scenarios of future developments of the driving forces of Lima’s water and wastewater system as well as of potential action measures. Thus, it contributed signficantly to development within a participaory setup and approval of the Action Plan “Lima 2040” by the key stakeholders in Lima. Further project activities included the preparation of transfer of the LiWa methodology and tools to other applications and the development of a prototype installation of concepts of the Lima Ecological Infrastructure Strategy in the district of San Martín de Porres of Lima.
