Energy efficient city and model city for renewable energy –Sub-project Traffic management center

MD E4

This project was selected for funding in the framework of a research competition tendered by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research “Energy efficient city” as part of the funding concept “Basic research energy 2020+”. The institute ifak is in charge of two sub-projects of this collaborative project: the establishment of a traffic management center in Magdeburg and the load management in electrical power grids.

The traffic management center to be established by the municipality of Magdeburg is planned to support the restructuring of existing and new traffic information and guidance systems in the city and its surrounding region. Thereby the traffic has to be controlled and directed under conditions of energy efficiency, traffic load and intended reduction of emissions. During the project a comprehensive analysis of the inventory of operational traffic systems and environmentally relevant conditions in the city of Magdeburg was undertaken. Investigations of potentials to optimise signalised traffic intersections were carried out by means of microscopic and macroscopic traffic simulation models.
