The real prototype of the VertiKKA vertical sewage treatment plant was inaugurated in Weimar on 5 September: an innovative façade greening element has now been installed on the Technikum building of Bauhaus University. In addition to plants used to treat grey water, it also consists of photovoltaic elements to generate electricity. An extensive measurement programme is planned over the next few months to quantify the efficiency and also the expected cooling effects to improve the urban climate. As one of the partners in this interdisciplinary research project funded by the BMBF as part of its ‘Resource-efficient urban districts’ funding programme, Dr Schütze from ifak took part in the inauguration ceremony as well as in working discussions with the research group.
